Girl Guides kick off Trees Ontario project!

TORONTO, April 9, 2009 – The Honourable Donna Cansfield, Minister of Natural Resources, kicked off the spring tree planting season and announced the first 50 Million Tree Weekend will feature major community tree planting events during this year’s Mother’s Day weekend. This year’s 50 Million Tree Weekend will feature community tree planting events across the province including Guelph, Alliston and Orangeville on May 8 and Newmarket and Kingston on May 9, 2009.

Girl Guides of Canada, celebrating their 100th anniversary next year, has a long and proud tradition of environmental stewardship. Since its inception, thousands of girls across the country have worked on environmental service projects each year. Badges like Forestry, Help Our Planet and Conservation encourage girls to learn about and take care of the world around them. Working with organizations like Trees Ontario helps to grow these ideas.

Trees Ontario, working with its partners, is the largest, not-for-profit tree planting partnership in North America. It is committed to the re-greening of Ontario through a range of tree planting activities. Trees Ontario is also partnering with the Ministry of Natural Resources to help deliver the Ontario government’s commitment to plant 50 million trees by 2020.

Provincial Project:
Yellow Fish Road - (PDF) - Looking for a water-related service project for the spring? Consider taking part in Trout Unlimited Canada’s Yellow Fish Road. This project involves learning about protecting storm drains and how what goes in them affects local bodies of water. Units use stencils to paint yellow fish near storm drains and distribute door hangers to explain that the yellow fish are there to remind them that anything that flows down the storm drain ends up polluting local water bodies. This is an educational and fun project that units of all ages can enjoy.

Girl Greatness starts with the Environment!

"On April 21st, the 3rd Stittsville Guides picked up garbage along the Trans Canada Trail. We spent an hour outside to help the environment for Earth Day. We went into ditches and there were so many things to pick up we couldn't collect it all. We need your help! We need you, the Stittsville Community, to recycle and help the environment. We hope you understand that the environment is important and that if we don't protect it, the ecosystem will be ruined forever." Written by Dominique Dube and Rachel Nadeau, members of the 3rd Stittsville Guide Unit. Click here to view photo.

The 17th Cornwall Sparks, Brownies, Guides and Pathfinders participated again in Pitch-In Canada this past Earth Week. The Sparks and Brownies collected litter on Pitt Street North in Cornwall, ON. The Guides collected litter in Terry Fox Park and in the surrounding neighborhood. The Pathfinders pitched in at the Optimist Park! This year marks the 10th year that the 17th Cornwall Units have participated in the Pitch-In Canada project! We promise to accept the Guiding Law: “respect our common environment”.
