Where do earthworms go in the winter?

Earthworms burrow deep down under a warm blanket of soil and curl up for warmth. When you are feeling like an earthworm in the winter, you can still work towards the Earthworm section of the Happy Trails Challenge. Many of the activities can be completed indoors. Check out all of the challenge requirements and the crest!

Local Recognition Ceremonies

Have you considered planning a local ceremony? Volunteers are encouraged to plan ceremonies close to home, making it more accessible for our members to be recognized for their accomplishments within the 2019-2020 Guiding year. Consider planning one today. The deadline to apply for funding for a 2020 ceremony is February 28. For more information and how to apply for funding visit the local recogniation page.

Diabetes Canada initiative 2020
to select members
With the success of the 2019 initiative, GGC, Ontario Council has once again partnered with Diabetes Canada to provide a fundraising opportunity for units in Ontario. In 2019, 50 units participated in this initiative. They collected 1,827 bags of textiles and 36,546 pounds of miscellaneous items. These units earned a total of $4712.14 for their efforts. To register for the clothing drive, please follow these easy steps!

Past practice has been, “The Safe Guide is a tool. The rule is to use the tool”. While this is still true and we’ve got forms, guidelines, procedures, deadlines and policies, what the heck does it really mean for busy Guiders?

Parents Volunteering at Unit Meetings and Camps

Have you invited parents to assist at upcoming unit meetings or a camp? If so, please have them complete and submit their A.7 Non-Member Volunteer Application Form today! Once their application is received, they will be prompted to complete their Police Record Check (PRC). Our partnership with Sterling BackCheck provides parents with a secure check at a reduced rate, however, if a local police check is being provided, the process could take a few weeks. Safe Guide paperwork is required a minimum of two weeks before your event. To ensure any parents who are participating as Unit Assistants have their PRC on file in time for upcoming events and unit meetings, have them submit their A.7 to member.admin3@guidesontario.org today!

iMIS updates for girls
to all Pathfinder and Ranger Unit Guiders and Community Guiders
If you have Pathfinders or Rangers in your unit that completed their Canada Cord or Trailblazer Leadership Award - Gold Award in the 2019-2020 Guiding year, complete the iMIS update form for all girls in your unit by August 31st, 2020. Submitting by the deadline will ensure that the awards girls earned this year will be updated and they will receive their certificates by mail by the end of 2020.

Even with a signed IR.1 form, it is best to ask the parent/guardian for written consent (an e-mail will do). Check out this and other handy tips in the Social Media Guidelines. Donation cheques

Please be advised that all 2019 donation cheques need to be received by Girls Guides of Canada, Ontario Council office by January 31st, 2020 to have a 2019 official donation receipt for income tax purposes. All donations received after February 1st, 2020 will be recorded as 2020 donations regardless of the date of the receipt/cheque.

Do you have an individual currently undergoing the screening process, intending to join your unit? Encourage them to take the necessary steps (booking their interview, completing their Police Record Check and reference invitation) to complete the process! It is important to note that if you require the individual to take part in an upcoming event or unit meeting, they do need to be a fully screened member before they can participate! You can tell that the entire screening process has been completed when they appear on your unit roster.

February Fun for all at RKY Camp on February 7-9th

Yes, you can have fun outdoors in February! RKY Camp plays host to all branches for a fantastic weekend of snowshoeing, learning to build fires in the winter and cook outside, playing some fun group games and challenging yourself on the ropes courses. Come inside to sleep and eat in heated facilities. Let us do the planning and forms for you and come and enjoy the weekend with your unit. Eligible girls receive Outdoor Experience Financial Assistance. Register today!

Travel opportunity
to all ACLs, Ranger Unit Guiders and Community Guiders and Rangers in communities 17-19, 22, 23, 37 and 38
Are you a Ranger looking to travel with fellow Guiding members? We are the 3rd BC SOAR 2020 Independent Trip Unit and have spots available for two Rangers.
